Washing Your Duvet: How to Keep It Hygienic and Fresh

The duvet is our daily companion during sleep – and that for many hours. Yet even though we lie under it every night, it is often washed far too infrequently. Over time, sweat, skin flakes, mites and dust accumulate. Anyone who wants to wash their duvet is not only ensuring better hygiene, but also a fresh sleeping climate.

How often should you wash a duvet?

The rule of thumb is: at least once a year, but twice is better. Allergy sufferers, people who sweat heavily at night or pet owners should clean their duvet more frequently – roughly every 3 to 6 months.

Washing a quilted duvet: what you should know

A quilted duvet is characterised by its even filling, which is held in place by the quilting seams. This makes quilted duvets easier to care for but harder to wash – although there are differences depending on the filling.

  • Microfibre quilted duvets: Washable at 60 °C, often also suitable for the tumble dryer. Ideal for allergy sufferers.
  • Down or feather duvets: Gentle cycle at 30–40 °C with a specialist down detergent. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry well (best in the dryer with tennis balls).

Tip: Always pay attention to the care label and wash the duvet – if possible – in a large drum (7 kg+) so that it can move freely.

Which washing machine should you use to wash a duvet?

Not every washing machine is designed for large duvets. For a duvet measuring 135x200 cm, a 7–8 kg drum is usually sufficient. For larger formats such as 200x220 cm, professional cleaning or a large drum at the laundrette may be a sensible option.

Don’t forget to dry it

After washing, the quilted duvet should dry out completely so that no moisture becomes trapped in the filling – otherwise there is a risk of mould or a musty smell. Ideal: in the dryer at a low temperature with dryer balls, or outside in the fresh air with plenty of time.

Washing your duvet is a hassle? There’s an easier way

If you find regularly washing your duvet cumbersome – whether due to its size, removing the cover or the long drying process – there is a modern alternative: washable duvets without a cover, which you can put straight in the washing machine, with no need to change bed linen separately.
