How Often Should You Wash a Duvet?
It is recommended to wash a standard duvet at least twice a year to remove dust, dead skin cells, and allergens. People who sweat a lot at night, suffer from allergies, or have pets should wash more frequently.
Duvet vs. Duvet Cover
The cover should ideally be washed every two weeks. The duvet itself requires a separate wash because bacteria can penetrate directly through the cover.
Machine Washing by Material Type
- Synthetic duvets: standard programme, high temperatures, fast drying
- Wool: special wool programme with mild detergent; air dry out of direct sunlight
- Down: gentle wash, low spin cycle, avoid bleach, dry at low temperature
- Bamboo: mild detergent, delicate programme, air dry only
- Cotton: normal programme at moderate temperature; can use a tumble dryer on low heat
Hand Washing in the Bathtub
Fill with lukewarm water and mild detergent, soak for about an hour, gently press out the water (do not wring), rinse several times, then dry appropriately.
Drying Methods
Air dry in the shade, use a tumble dryer on a low temperature setting with dryer balls, shake regularly, and make sure the duvet is completely dry to prevent mould.
The Zelesta Solution: Duvet Without a Cover
The brand offers washable duvets without a separate cover as simpler alternatives: wash every two weeks on standard machine settings, quick air drying or low-heat tumble drying.
